Amnesia

By "Jade" DeKoma

Jade stared out the window with a towel around his waist. His hair was still damp from the 'fresher. The Yavaris cut through space, in an orbit around Yavin IV. The planet had a nice view from above, but it was nothing to shout about. He jumped as Jaina wrapped her arms around him. "Hi honey. What're you doin'?" she asked, reaching up and gingerly messing up his wet hair, sending tiny beads of water all over.

He laughed, turned, and gave her a long and passionate kiss. "I was just thinking, Jaina," he told her when he finally stopped kissing her.

"About what?" She rested her head on his bare chest and closed her eyes.

"Just... about everything. I don't know, it's hard to explain." He ran his fingers through her hair.

"I understand," she murmured as she held the embrace. Jade quickly dressed in his flightsuit and then joined Jaina on the couch in their quarters aboard the Yavaris. She turned and kissed him lightly. He turned it into a heavy and passionate kiss, but she looked at him quizically.

"What's wrong honey?" Jade asked, matching her expression.

"You... you... just don't seem yourself tonight. I don't know... just like something... happened that you want to tell me about but... but don't know how to tell me..." she said, searching his face and finally coming across the deep purple eyes she loved so much. Jaina smiled and shook her head. "Never mind honey, I guess I was wrong," she said after she kissed him again.

He pulled away and paced about the room. "Well... uh... I should tell you something that happened today," he said nervously.

She looked at him and grabbed his wrist as he walked by her. Her beautiful brown eyes looked deep into his purple eyes and he nodded, sitting down. He knew her expressions well. She took both his hands into hers. "You can tell me anything Jade," she said with a smile that made him want to kiss her.

"Wedge and I... we had another fight today. He hurt my brother jYorn real bad, honey. Well, he didn't, but his bodyguards did. Wedge and my brother were fighting and his guards took cheap shots at him with their lightsabers. He got picked up by Rendi and got treated for his wounds, but... his back... it's half cybernetic now. He's... he's never going to be the same, sweetheart. Scars for life and all that. I had to do something, so I started to fight Wedge, but then he left... I'm going to confront him again. I have to... for my brother..." He looked deep into her face for a response.

She bit her lip and looked back at him. A thin tear gathered in her eye. "Jade, honey, I know you're upset about all this, but please, please don't hurt Wedge. He's my friend and yours too. If you're going to go after anyone, go after the guards. Just leave Wedge out of it," she said imploringly.

"You know I can't do that honey..." he replied, his expression going stone cold.

"Jade, put your head here so I can touch your temples," she said, motioning to a spot in the air and he complied reluctantly. She gently placed her index and middle finger from each hand to either of his temples. He shuddered briefly at her loving touch. Jaina went into a Jedi trance and explored his mind, searching for his Jedi potential spot.

She found it after a few minutes, seeing that it looked dark and cloudy. She didn't like the looks of this but she knew, for her lover's sake, she couldn't just turn away. Jaina continued onward cautiously.

Meanwhile, the door slid open, revealing the shadowy presence of Wedge Antilles. Jade stood up, his BlastTech DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol set to stun, already in hand and shouted, "Wedge, get the hell out or I'll burn you where you stand!!". Wedge promptly exited and then Jade looked down at Jaina on the couch. She was rubbing her back and wincing. All the negative energy from Jade must have caught her offguard. "I'm sorry, honey," he said as he reached his hand down to help her up.

"It's... it's okay Jade," she said nervously. Once again, she placed her hands on his temples, only more timidly this time. She re-entered his mind and found his potential spot again. Jaina hovered around the spot, examining it, while being careful not to trigger it. An idea suddenly sprung into her mind. "Jade, there is an evil presence around your potential spot. I'm going to separate them and expell the evil thoughts. Okay?" she asked mentally.

"Okay. Be careful honey," he replied out loud.

"Always," she said as she slowly began to send healing energies into the orbs. They shook at first and then ever so slowly began to drift apart. After twenty minutes of mentally exhausting work, the evil thoughts had been despelled and the potential spot was still cloudy, but in the normal way. She let herself relax, which triggered the potential spot.

Jade could feel his spot triggered and his hands darted out to grab Jaina. Too late. She was halfway across the room. He stood quickly and heard a loud, sickening thump. He looked over and Jaina was slumped against one of the durasteel walls, knocked completely unconscious. He ran over to her and stumbled, landing on his knees and sliding over to her in a very odd yet entertaining fashion. "Jaina? Jaina?!? Can you hear me??" he asked, tapping her face lightly with the back of his hand.

Jaina groaned and tilted her head, revealing a dark red spot against the durasteel wall. Jade gasped and saw that she had struck her head with such force it had started to bleed. He got a damp towel and cleaned the blood, then healed her wounds lovingly. Jade slid his hands under her knees back. He tightened his grip and hoisted her into the air, carrying her to the couch and setting her down with great care. He didn't want the poor girl hurt anymore then she already was.

He crouched down next to the couch and gathered her into his arms, weeping softly into her flightsuit. Jaina moaned again and Jade looked up startled. "Honey, are you waking up?" he said, sniffling.

"I... I... where... who... what... what am I doing here?" she asked, trying to sit up.

Jade put a hand on her chest and pushed her back to the sofa. "Lie down, honey. You hit your head on that wall and got knocked unconscious. You're awake now and okay. That's all that matters," he said as he kissed her lips lightly.

Jaina pulled away, startled, and looked at him confusedly. "Who are you? Who am I? What... what is this place?" she asked, looking around at the strange room.

Jade looked at her as if she had grown a second head. "You... you don't remember??" he asked, feeling hot tears well up in the back of his eyes. He already knew the answer, but he felt he had to ask.

"No, I don't. Please... who are you?" she said, looking at him soulfully.

"I... I'm Jade. Logan Jade DeKoma. Your... your," he stammered.

"My what?" she asked, hoping he could say it.

"Your lover... and your fiancee," he said, looking at her with hot tears streaming down his cheeks.

Jaina gasped and shook her head. "I'm sorry... Jade... I don't remember. If what you say is true, you must be crushed..." she said, looking into his deep purple eyes, trying as best she could to remember. She... she had no feelings for him. No love... maybe a twinge of friendship, but that's as far as they went.

Jade sobbed and nodded. "I'll help you remember, honey. I'm not going to lose you to a little amnesia. Besides, you're too tough for amnesia." He tryed to force a grin. It didn't work. She bit her lip and nodded, hoping he was right. She wanted to remember, she really did.

"Thank you... Jade... you're so... nice to help me with this. I owe you one," she told him, still trying to remember.

He shook his head and wiped a tear from his eye. "Jaina, I am nice but I'm doing this because I love you, and I want you to be happy and healthy. Having no memory is neither. We'll work through this Jaina, and come out stronger then ever. We always do," he said, grinning tearfully.

She nodded. "Well, where should we begin?" she asked, not really knowing what the best approach to beating amnesia is. He thought for a moment and then looked at her with an idea. "What?" she asked, trying to read his face.

"Tell me anything, and I mean ANYTHING that you remember," he said, trying to get as much information out of her as he possibly could. She thought long and hard, searching the inner recesses of her mind for even a minute memory that could help her. She shook her head and Jade nodded, trying not to let his depression show on his face. A choked sob escaped from Jaina, and Jade looked up at her, surprised. He quickly sat next to her and gave her a tight hug. She rested her head on his shoulder, crying as hard as she could into his faded orange flightsuit.

He gently placed a hand on her back and moved it up and down slowly, trying his best to comfort her. She continued to cry, but softer and slower. Maybe he was doing some good after all. He wasn't sure. She looked up at him and sniffled, wiping a tear from her eye. "What's next?" she asked, trying to stop crying.

He bit his lip, thinking about what would help. He snapped his fingers and puts his hands on her temples gently. She shuddered briefly at his warm touch and then relaxed into it. Jade's eyes went distant and rolled back in his head as he entered her mind. "What can you tell me about myself?" Jaina asked, hopefully.

"You're a Jedi Master for one..." he said, gently searching her mind. She opened her eyes, startled somewhat. A Jedi Master??? she thought to herself. Wow, I've done quite well for myself, being a Jedi Master and having a man as sweet as him. "Yes, you have done rather well for yourself if I do say so myself," he said, a smile playing over his lips as her probed her mind. She looked up startled.

"How in the Force did you hear my thoughts?" she asked, stunned.

"I'm in your mind. I'm hearing, seeing, breathing and feeling everything you are thinking right now," he said, still probing her mind for lost memories. He finally found a big collection of memories but they were all cloudy. Dark... and... faded away. Like they weren't there anymore. He suddenly had an idea. Maybe if he fed her some of his own memories of them, they'd help bring back hers. "Jaina, sit perfectly still and don't be startled if images pop into your head unexpectedly," he said as he began to transfer memories between them.

She nodded, and then an image of her and Jade kissing filled her mind. She gasped... "I... I... I think I remember that..." she said, trying to bring back the memory. "It... it was right after I... I... told you... I would marry... you!..." she said, forcing the words out.

He nodded and sent another image into her mind... this one of them walking hand in hand up to the Massassi Temple, the first day they had arrived on Yavin IV. She smiled. "That was the first time you saw Yavin IV..." she said excitedly, memory upon beautious memory flooding back into her mind. She broke contact with him and stared at Jade for endless seconds. She whispered "I love you, Jade," as she pressed her lips to his. They shared the romantic kiss for what seemed like eternity...

Jade pulled back and hugged her tightly. She winced slightly at a brief twinge of pain from the strength of his hug, but Jaina pushed it back. Right now she wanted to be as close as possible to Jade...
