"We'll be landing a few kilometers from Tibor's largest agri-center. We will then impersonate the workers and discover if they are there of their own free will or lawfully. If t hey are not we are to investigate the extent to which slavery is used.
Tibor is rainforest world, extremely warm with temperatures reaching into the 120s most of the year." Tenel Ka lectured, holding the sides of the computer screen with two hands. "It also has few large cities. It is mostly agricultural..." Tenel Ka paused looking at Jacen, obviously not paying any attention, "the inhabitants also have a custom of dressing in elaborate green costumes and large masks. They then steal young children from their beds and worship their dark gods...Jacen. Jacen!"
"Hmmm? Oh, I'm sorry Tenel Ka. I guess I was a little zoned. You were saying?" Jacen said, slightly embarrassed.
"I was saying that practically the only thing produced on Tibor is lesal, a plant which has several medicinal purposes. The useful part of the plant is its flowers. The flowers don't look like flowers. They're extremely long (about a meter or so) and delicate threads. So far no machine has been found to be able to pick it without breaking most of the fibers, so the industry is still reliant on manual labor." Tenel Ka opened her mouth as if to go on, but stopped, realizing that Jacen could not concentrate on anything more. Everyone was tired, besides there really was little more information to go over.
Jacen knew his sister could not have missed the fact that the conversation had become a little awkward, and that even Tenel Ka's concentration was faltering slightly every now and then. At this point, his sister's link with him, as well as her intuition would've ruled out Tenel Ka's arm as the only reason. Luckily, his sister had enough decency to stay out of it.
"I believe I will rest before we arrive," Tenel Ka said. It was really an excuse to go someplace quiet where she could think.
"I think I'm going to follow that idea in a few minuets, myself," Jacen replied, "but first I want to play the computer in a holo-game."
Jaina was piloting the Rock Dragon, with Zekk copiloting. Normally Lowie would copilot, but he had left for home right before they left Yavin 4. Nothing against Lowie, but it was kind of nice to be able to talk to Zekk alone for a while. They hadn't simply talked in a long time.
"All I'm saying is that you could find out what's going on without invading Jacen's privacy, just by asking him some questions, and using your force connection to see more than he says."
Zekk and Jaina had both sensed something up between Tenel Ka and Jacen. At first it had just seemed like the arm was the cause, but now.... Zekk had spent the good part of the last hour trying to convince her to find out what was going on.
"First of all, using the force to see more than Jacen is telling us would be the definition of invasion of privacy. Second, Jacen and Tenel Ka will tell us what's going on eventually, if we give them space. Third can we PLEASE talk about something else?" Jaina replied
Zekk laughed, "OK, OK, count me officially off the subject."
Jacen had said he was going to rest in a few minuets, but in reality it took 45 minuets before he ended his holo-game. He now sought out the comfort of sleep (and thought) in one of the bunkrooms of the Rock Dragon. He entered the first room, and saw Tenel Ka sitting up on one of the bottom bunks. "Oh, I'm sorry Tenel Ka. I didn't know you were in here." To someone who did not know Tenel Ka, she would have appeared exactly as she always did, but Jacen could tell she was anxious and nervous. "....Is everything all right Tenel Ka?"
"Yes. I have a strange feeling about this mission, though. It is not a bad feeling. You needn't be worried, friend Jacen." She said 'friend Jacen' a little softer than normal.
"All right. If you're sure nothing's wrong, I guess I'll just sleep in the other room. See you in the morning..." Jacen couldn't make his legs work for a few seconds. He hung in the doorway and looked at her. She was wearing a plain white cotton shirt and shorts, suitable for sleeping, and her hair was loose and unbraided. Jacen was sure he had seen nothing so beautiful in his life, but then, he thought that everytime he saw Tenel Ka. When he seemed to have regained use of his legs, he started to leave.
"Wait. Jacen, do you think...do you think you could stay and tell me a few jokes."
Jacen was shocked. "...Um, sure, Tenel Ka, it would be my pleasure." They didn't talk about the kiss, or the mission, or anything really. Jacen simply told her jokes until she fell asleep. As usual, she didn't laugh, but it didn't seem to matter. When she had fallen asleep, he took a bunk next to hers and went to sleep himself. It was an odd beginning, but it definitely had the feeling of a beginning.
Ania ran through a maze of mirrors. A horrible laughing was chasing her, and she couldn't get away from it. Everywhere she turned was her reflection, but it wasn't her, it was Lerid. She was searching for her father. If she could just find him, he could save Lerid. Lerid was calling her name, begging for help. She stopped and looked at the reflection that wasn't her. Then she saw herself pick up a hammer and break the mirror, and the reflection in it. Her father was there now, holding the broken mirror. "What have you done?" he cried, "You killed my son!"
Ania awoke screaming and in a cold sweat. Lison put her arms around her and told her it was going to be OK, but Ania didn't think anything could ever be OK again.
